War On Drugs Or Mexicans?
In turn of the century America, during the first years of the 1900’s, marijuana was pretty much completely legal in the United States. Tons of farmers grew it, and millions of American’s imbibed it in medical tinctures, among its other various industrial and recreational uses. However, when researching the roots of the anti-marijuana movement in America, you can trace the rational for weed becoming illegal in this country to one simple reason: to discriminate against Mexicans.
The first law in America that specifically made weed illegal was passed in El Paso, Texas, in 1905. The law was passed because Mexicans in the area were getting off from work and smoking a bit of the cheeba to relax after a hard days work. The law had nothing to do with the effects of marijuana, only to specifically discriminate against the Mexican’s who used it. From then on it became a political platform for douchebag politicians to get elected into office by playing off of people’s prejudice.
Now, fast forward more than 100 years. How is the state of the war on drugs as compared to when it started? Here is an example. The US Forest Service issued this statement to it’s officers: “Michael Skinner, a law enforcement officer with the U.S. Forest Service in Colorado, said warning signs of possible drug trafficking include ‘tortilla packaging, beer cans, Spam, Tuna, Tecate beer cans,’ and campers who play Spanish music. He said the warning includes people speaking Spanish.”
As you can see, the War on Drugs is as prejudiced, as racist, and as bigoted as the day it started over 100 years ago, with little to no progress since. Luckily in this day and age, information spreads. The majority of the American people know that the War on Drugs is a war on our sons and our daughters, our mothers and fathers, our friends and neighbors. This war, like most wars, will one day come to an end, and God willing, that day will come soon.
